‘The Keepers’ Review: The Murder Of Sister Cathy Cesnik

If you loved ‘Making A Murderer’ then you’ll most definitely enjoy ‘The Keepers‘. Netflix’s latest true-crime documentary will no doubt have you on the edge of your seat.

Based around the unsolved murder of Sister Cathy Cesnik in 1969, this breathtakingly bold documentary is fuelled by an urge to seek justice and to seek the real answers as to how and why she was murdered. Sister Cathy Cesnik’s remains were found in 1970, her body lying on a frozen hillside, far from home and with her skull broken in. To this day, no one has been able to conclusively say what happened to her, with modern DNA examinations still proving un-helpful.

In this skilful and detailed series, the director pieces together interviews from former pupils, police officers, local journalists and family members to help shed some truth to her murder. A series that slowly unfolds to reveal much more than just a cold-case story, ‘The Keepers‘ is a series not to be missed.

Unravelling details of horrific child and sexual abuse, within establishments belonging to the Catholic Church, this heartfelt and honest documentary will leave you in true shock and disbelief for some of the testimonials described by the brave survivors of such crimes. Director Ryan White explains, ‘It’s disheartening, infuriating, and disgusting to watch unfold, but that doesn’t hold a candle to how these women must have felt for the past four decades’.

The main theory is that Sister Cathy, having been informed of the abuse happening at Archbishop Keough High School, was murdered as a method of silencing her from speaking out about the abuse subjected to the young women, however, as with any docuseries, tables can turn very quickly.

A series that will leave you questioning, ‘How much involvement did the Catholic Church really have?‘, ‘Was Sister Cathy simply in the wrong place at the wrong time?‘ and most importantly ‘Which witnesses and accounts can you truly trust?‘, I would highly recommend this to anyone who can’t get enough of cold-case revivals. Taking true-crime documentary down a new, religion based path, ‘The Keepers‘ is most definitely a series that’ll have you watching each episode back to back.
