If you’re a HUGE fan of Louis Theroux and his highly entertaining and equally as informative documentaries, then this is the documentary/film is a definite must-watch! Aiming to shed some light on one of the worlds most illusive and secretive religions, Louis Theroux hunts down some ex-members in his aim to re-create, with the help of auditioned actors, an insight into what it was really like to be a trusty follower of L. Ron Hubbard and his successor David Miscavige.
Rocking up in Los Angeles, Louis’ main aim is to film a series of both scripted and unscripted scenes depicting key moments from the life of the David Miscavige, the current chief of Scientology. Interviewing key “blown” (those that have left/escaped the following) figures, such as Marty Rathbun, Louis is able to gain intriguing and undisclosed information that has never been disclosed outside of the HeadQuarter walls.
Shining light on the training and auditing processes used by the Church, Rathbun details how loyal followers were really treated, and how claims of violent behaviour within the organisation is more than true. Having been shunned by the Church, Marty is constantly harassed by “Squirrel Busters”, in turn leading to a number of confrontations within the documentary. Despite partaking and providing his knowledge for free, this documentary will leave you questioning whether Marty is still brainwashed, given his slightly shady attitude.
Full with the usual awkward silences and moments of uneasy eye contact, this documentary is sure to shed some light on the ins and outs of this supposed “cult” following. Packed to the brim with confrontation and ambiguous attitudes, this film also investigates the behaviour and most well-known profile of Tom Cruise. Ranking at a level of ‘Operating Thetan 3’ Tom Cruise is well and truly branded with the stamp of Scientology. Appearing at a number, if not most, of the meetings, Louis sheds some light onto how Celebrities, including new and hopeful actors, are sucked into this corporate cult and it’s sci-fi inspired beliefs.
So, if you’re looking for another entertaining and highly interesting documentary to indulge in, then this one’s for you! With his easy going attitude and persistent questioning, Louis is never afraid to ask the questions that the audience has always wanted to ask. Sticking his neck out on the line to investigate hot-topics and cult-like environments, you surely won’t be disappointed by the revelations that he discovers in this documentary/film.
